Vegetable Seeds
It belongs to the Leguminosae family. It is a cool season crop grown throughout the world. Green pods are used for vegetable purposes and dried peas are used as pulse.
Nutritive value : It is a rich source of proteins, amino acids and sugars. Green peas straw is a good source of nutritional fodder for livestock.
01 | Sowing method: Seeds are sown directly in raised beds or containers during monsoon and winter which is an active sowing window for Peas. |
---|---|
02 | Growing in container: Use big circular pots or grow bag with 16” diameter and minimum depth of 8-10 inches, take a container of your choice with drainage holes at the bottom, fill the container with proper potting layers & selected growing medium that is 1 part Garden Soil + 1 part Coco Peat + 1 part Vermicompost Or 2 part Garden Soil + 1 part Organic Manure. |
03 | Sow 2 seeds at the centre of a pot, on raised beds, sow two seeds per spot in a spacing of 1 x 1 ft. Push the seeds a little in soil medium with your fingers & completely cover them with surrounding soil. Water the sown seed bed immediately by a light shower with a watering can. |
04 | Seeds will germinate within the first 6-8 days or so and tiny sprouts will be visible in the sprouting stage and the first two leaves will emerge in the second week of germination. These are false leaves called cotyledons. |
05 | First leaves will emerge above cotyledons at the end of the second week. Seedlings will start growing into a small plant after the second week onwards. |
06 | After the second week, keep only single seedlings at one spot, cut off the weak, small and lagging seedlings with a pair of scissors is the thinning stage. |
01 | Pea’s plants require full sunlight therefore your raised bed should be made at a bright sunny spot and keep the Peas container under open sunlight in the backyard. |
---|---|
02 | Watering technique: Water your potted Peas plant every day in summer by watering the soil near the plant by using a watering can to make sure that the plants get water in the form of the shower and not by a single flow. You can also make provision for watering by drip irrigation system for your raised beds in the kitchen garden. |
03 | Manuring: Add good quality organic manure in the soil with 2:1 ratio before sowing seeds. Organic manure can be well rotted cow dung manure, farmyard manure and compost or Vermicompost. |
04 | When your Peas climber is more than 45 days old, provide one tablespoon of 15:15:15 (NPK) fertilizer per plant or mix handful of Vermicompost in the soil around each plant as top dressing manure |
05 | Always look for the early signs of any insect/fungal/ any other infections. Spray appropriate medicines as soon as any symptoms of such diseases are spotted. Watch out for powdery mildew when plants are young and care the plants |
06 | The green pea’s pods should be harvested at the proper stage. Harvesting of peas may start as soon as peas start changing colour from dark to green after 75 day of sowing. Multiple pickings like, 4 to 5 pickings can be done within 6 to 10 days interval. |
