Watermelon originated in South Africa. It is an important cucurbitaceous vegetable in India. It is an excellent desert fruit and its juice contains 92% water along with proteins, minerals and carbohydrates.
01 | Time of sowing: In north India it is sown during middle of January to March and in Nov to Dec. |
---|---|
02 | Spacing: Depending upon sowing method spacing may vary. In the pit method use row to row spacing of 2-3.5m and 60 cm between two plants. |
03 | Sowing Depth: Plant seed about 2-3cm deep. |
04 | Method of sowing: For sowing different methods of planting like furrow method, Pit method and hill method can be used depending upon climate and season. |
05 | Furrow Method: Sowing is done on either side of furrows. Sow 3-4 seeds (After germination keep only healthy seedling) at a time and keep plant to plant distance of 60-90cm. |
06 | Pit Method: Sow 4 seeds in a pit. For that make a pit of 60x60x60cm at a distance of 2-3.5m between two rows and 0.6-1.2m between plants. Fill the pit with well decomposed cow dung and soil. After germination keep only one seedling. |
07 | Hill method: Similar to pit method. In this, pits of 30x30x30cm pits are made at a distance of 1-1.5m. Two seeds are sown per hill. |
01 | Watermelon plants require full sunlight; therefore your raised bed should be made at a bright sunny spot or keep the Watermelon container under open sunlight in the backyard. |
---|---|
02 | Watering technique: Water your potted Watermelon plant every day in summer by watering the soil near the plant by using a watering can to make sure that the plants get water in the form of the shower and not by a single flow. You can also make provision for watering by drip irrigation system for your raised beds in the kitchen garden. |
03 | Manuring: As mentioned earlier, add good quality organic manure in the soil with 2:1 ratio before sowing seeds. Organic manure can be well rotted cow dung manure, farmyard manure and compost or Vermicompost. |
04 | When your Watermelon climber is more than 45 days old, Provide one tablespoon of 15:15:15 (NPK) fertilizer per plant or mix handful of Vermicompost in the soil around each plant as top dressing manure |
05 | Always look for the early signs of any insect/fungal/ any other infections. Spray appropriate medicines as soon as any symptoms of such diseases are spotted. Watch out for Powdery Mildew when plants are young and care the plants |
06 | Avoid over flooding in watermelon fields. At time of applying irrigation, should not wet the vines or vegetative parts, especially during flowering and fruit-set. |
07 | Avoid frequent irrigation in heavy soil as it will promote excessive vegetative growth. For better sweetness and flavour, stop irrigation or reduce watering 3-6days before harvesting. |
08 | Watermelon will start flowering in the second month. You can start harvesting Watermelon fruits after 70-80 days of seed sowing |
