Vegetable Seeds
Pumpkin is a plump, nutritious orange vegetable, and a highly nutrient dense food. It is low in calories but rich in vitamins and minerals.
01 | Sowing method: Seeds are sown directly in raised beds or containers during Monsoon & Summer which are active sowing windows for Pumpkin. |
---|---|
02 | Growing techniques in container: Use big circular pots or grow bag with 16” diameter and minimum depth of 8-10 inches, take a container of your choice with drainage holes at the bottom, fill the container with proper potting layers and selected growing medium that is 1 part Garden Soil + 1 part Coco Peat + 1 part Vermicompost Or 2 part Garden Soil + 1 part Organic Manure. |
03 | Sow 2 seeds at the centre of a pot or on raised beds sow two seeds per spot in a spacing of 3 x 3 ft in the backyard. Push the seeds a little in soil medium with your fingers and completely cover them with surrounding soil. Water the sown seed bed immediately by a light shower with a watering can. |
04 | Seeds will germinate within first 6-8 days or so and tiny sprouts will be visible and the first two leaves will emerge in the second week of germination called as cotyledons, first true leaves will emerge above cotyledons at the end of the second week & seedlings will start growing into a small plant after second week onwards. |
05 | After the second week, keep only a single seedling at one spot, cut off the weak, small and lagging seedlings with a pair of scissors. |
01 | Pumpkin plants require full sunlight; therefore your raised bed should be made at a bright sunny spot or keep the Pumpkin container under open sunlight in the backyard. |
---|---|
02 | Watering technique: Water your potted Pumpkin plant every day in summer by watering the soil near the plant by using a watering can to make sure that the plants get water in the form of the shower and not by a single flow. You can also make provision for watering by drip irrigation system for your raised beds in the kitchen garden. |
03 | Pumpkin is an aggressive climber and needs plenty of space to grow. So develop a strong trellis support up to height of 5-6 ft, by using locally available material like pipes, bamboo, ropes and wires etc. for your Pumpkin plant. |
04 | Manuring: As mentioned earlier, add good quality organic manure in the soil with 2:1 ratio before sowing seeds. Organic manure can be well rotted cow dung manure, farmyard manure and compost or Vermicompost. |
05 | When your Pumpkin climber is more than 45 days old, Provide one tablespoon of 15:15:15 (NPK) fertilizer per plant or mix handful of Vermicompost in the soil around each plant as top dressing manure |
06 | Always look for the early signs of any insect/fungal/ any other infections. Spray appropriate medicines as soon as any symptoms of such diseases are spotted. Watch out for Powdery Mildew when plants are young and care the plants |
07 | Pumpkin climber/creeper will start flowering in the second month. You can start harvesting raw Pumpkin fruits after 70-80 days of seed sowing and also leave it for ripening. |
08 | Harvesting is done with the help of sharp knife or any sharp object |
09 | Indam Chakra is suitable for harvesting either immature green or fully mature red brown fruit depending on what the market requires. |
